It’s a black comedy based on various film noir tropes: forgotten lovers, crimes unseen or uncommitted. It’s a parody of early twentieth century decadence and sybaritism. It’s a loving evocation of half remembered dreams and adolescent fantasies. Its not the apotheosis of the work of "The sick men of Europe" as Pauline Kael declared. There are no answers in this gorgeous tapestry of questions about life and art that this film embodies. But to see it is be newly awakened to the power of cinema.
